Two Mirrors

EMFEB’s first tour to Jersey presented an exploration of British and Russian string ensemble music with an educational twist! Christopher George joined forces with conductor Benjamin Ellin and the EMFEB Lime Ensemble for four concerts, two public and two for schools. The two public concerts had mirror-image programmes, one British and one Russian. The programmes included Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto no. 1, Tchaikovsky’s String Serenade, and Bliss’s Music for Strings. The two schools concerts explored the similarities and differences between Russian and British music. Each concert featured a piano concerto with soloist Christopher George, and the highlight of the tour was the world premiere of a new piano concerto written by Owen Bourne, a young composer who is already establishing a prolific career in the UK. This work was entitled Brine - A Jersey Concerto, and was received with great critical acclaim. The tour was sponsored by the Jersey Arts Trust, Benest and Syvret, Island Music, Ron and Helen Hickman, and the Jersey Instrumental Music Service.
