East Meets West

EMFEB’s second tour to Jersey was bigger and bolder than the first, and centred on a huge community music project involving literally hundreds of children in the creation and performance of a new work.

Children from years 5 and 6 at every Primary school on the island were invited to write a poem entitled East Meets West. Over two hundred and fifty poems came back from schools all over the island, and were sent to the resident composer of the EMFEB group, Owen Bourne, who selected eight of these poems to use as the words for a huge choral piece, entitled East Meets West. The work was written for the adventurous combination of Double Childrens Choir and Wind Ensemble. The first choir was the Musical Originals Singers, a talented chamber choir of young singers aged 13-17 led by Imogen Nicholls. The second choir was open to any primary schoolchildren in years 5 and 6 from any school on the island, coordinated by Liz Du Feu. In total, three separate choirs of primary schoolchildren were formed, involving over one hundred and twenty children from twenty-two different primary schools. The tour consisted of five concerts, from the East to the West of the island, and was an outstanding success. This tour was sponsored by the Jersey Arts Trust, Jersey Instrumental Music Service, Benest and Syvret, and Kleinwort Benson.
